As the year comes to a close we all look back at what the year has brought to us. For us at Nicuesa, we always feel privileged to live, work and host our guests in the pristine rainforest and sea location. We also recognize that with this privilege comes responsibility.
From the outset including the development and subsequent operations a major goal of ours has been to be as sustainable as possible. This year we feel strongly we have taken great additional strides towards completing many of our goals of conservation and sustainability goals and wanted to share some of the highlights to inspire your own sustainable actions at home:
More Sustainable Every Day
This is our goal at Playa Nicuesa Rainforest Lodge, and here are some of this years' results achieved:
- SOLAR DRYING ROOM- Less dryers = LESS GAS AND ELECTRIC = Less carbon footprint.
- THE MEAN, CLEAN AND GREEN MACHINE - A NEW ECO GENERATOR POWERED BY RECYCLED VEGETABLE OIL- When the sun does not shine on our solar panels we are still using clean energy now!
- Reforestation Program: Plant a new hard wood tree to help the environment and remember your visit!
- Sustainability Coordinator: We now have a staff member devoted only to these issues.
- Sustainability Center: Check out all this years exciting programs we put in place.
- Community Outreach: Different ways we found how to give back during the year.
Continued Support of the Osa Campaign / The Nature Conservancy
We also want to thank all our guests for contributing over $5000 to the Osa Campaign via the Nature Conservancy. This will be matched by Nicuesa Lodge leading to over $10,000 in funds to help preserve the Osa/Golfo Dulce Region. For the upcoming year we will be continuing this program while also using contributions to help support our incredible but fragile marine environment via partnership with Mar Viva and Pretoma; two organizations devoted to the protection of the seas. Our goal is to again raise over $10,000 for these programs in 2010!
Speaking of Goals!! - The Edible Landscapes Recipe Book
We must admit that the completion of our recipe book: Edible Landscapes; a collection of our own recipes that express life in touch with nature - expected to be published in 2009, has been moving at a very slow tropical sloth like pace. Nevertheless, as part of our holiday spirit, we wanted to share with you a few additional recipes... AND A NEW YEARS RESOLUTION TO FINISH AND PUBLISH THE COOK BOOK in 2010!!
