How to Get to Costa Rica and Nicuesa: International Flights, Local Connections, and a Boat Ride into the Rainforest

The journey to Nicuesa Rainforest Lodge gradually brings Costa Rica into focus. First comes the international flight, then a smaller aircraft heading toward the South Pacific. Finally, a boat carries you across Golfo Dulce toward a forested shoreline. By the time you arrive, the journey has already introduced you to the landscape you came to experience.

The most straightforward route to Nicuesa is to fly into Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO), connect to Golfito (GLF) or Puerto Jiménez (PJM), and take a lodge-arranged boat transfer. Nicuesa's team can help coordinate those final connections so your arrival fits the boat schedule.

Flying to Costa Rica: Start with San José

Costa Rica's two main international gateways are Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO), in Alajuela near San José, and Guanacaste Airport (LIR), near Liberia.

For a trip centered on Nicuesa, SJO is generally the more practical choice because it connects with domestic services to both South Pacific arrival towns. Liberia can work within a longer Costa Rica itinerary, but onward travel needs separate planning.

When searching for flights, use SJO rather than the city name alone. San José, Costa Rica, and San Jose, California, are different destinations.

International Airlines and Hubs Serving San José

Travelers can reach Costa Rica through major North American, European, and Latin American gateways. Even without a nonstop flight from your home city, a connection through one of these airports can bring the rainforest within reach.

The following are selected airline–gateway combinations published by SJO Airport. Routes and operating seasons vary, so check your travel dates directly with the airline.

Choose the Arrival Time Alongside the Fare

An appealing international fare is only one part of the journey. Check whether its arrival time works with the domestic flight and Nicuesa's boat transfer.

An afternoon or evening arrival may be better paired with a night near SJO and a domestic flight the next morning. That pause can make the journey more comfortable, particularly after a long international flight.

Domestic Flights to Golfito and Puerto Jiménez

From San José, the next stage brings you toward Golfo Dulce. Both Golfito and Puerto Jiménez serve as arrival points for Nicuesa, so compare their flight options before committing to one.

Flying to Golfito Airport (GLF)

SANSA Airlines publishes flights between San José and Golfito, with an approximate flight time of 50 minutes.

Golfito is a useful gateway for guests continuing to Nicuesa. Share your flight details with the lodge so the team can coordinate the airport meeting and onward boat transfer. Frequencies depend on the season and schedule.

Flying to Puerto Jiménez Airport (PJM)

SANSA also serves Puerto Jiménez from San José. Costa Rica Green Airways publishes a San José–Puerto Jiménez service, providing another airline option to compare for your dates.

Puerto Jiménez lies on the Osa Peninsula, across Golfo Dulce from the mainland shore. From here, your journey continues by boat to Nicuesa. Ask the lodge which arrival option best fits your overall itinerary.

The flight south can be a highlight in itself. Depending on the route, weather, and your seat, the Pacific coastline may unfold below, revealing forested headlands, winding waterways, and the Térraba–Sierpe wetlands. Look out for the distinctive Whale's Tail sandbar at Marino Ballena National Park near Uvita, most clearly defined at low tide. It is a spectacular introduction to Costa Rica's South Pacific, where rivers, rainforest, and ocean meet.

Connecting at SJO: Give Yourself Enough Time

Domestic departures use a separate terminal. Allow time to complete international arrival formalities, collect baggage, and check in for your onward flight.

SANSA currently recommends a minimum five-hour connection between an arriving international flight and its domestic service. Follow the operating airline's guidance rather than assuming a short connection will work.

Before booking, also review the domestic airline's baggage allowance. Smaller-aircraft requirements can differ from those of your international carrier. Check the allowance attached to your fare, including hand luggage and any additional equipment.

If you book separate tickets, check each carrier's conditions for delays and missed connections. Plan the return journey with the same care.

The Final Stage: Across Golfo Dulce by Boat

Nicuesa is accessible only by boat, and that final crossing is part of its character. Buildings give way to forest, and the water becomes your approach to the lodge.

Arrange this transfer directly with Nicuesa rather than assuming that any boat service will reach the property. The lodge's transfer windows depend on operating and weather conditions, so confirm the latest permitted pickup for your specific travel date before purchasing domestic flights.

Nicuesa can also discuss charter flights or ground transport to Golfito if those better suit your itinerary.

Let Nicuesa Help Connect the Journey

Before finalizing flights, send the lodge your proposed international itinerary, preferred dates, and number of travelers. The team can help you assess Golfito versus Puerto Jiménez and coordinate the final approach.

Explore Nicuesa's location and arrival information, then contact the team to plan your journey. With the connections arranged, you can enjoy the changing views—from international gateway to rainforest shore.
