From colorful fish to graceful sea turtles and majestic rays, these reefs are a vital part of the ocean's delicate web of life.  

There are several reasons why coral reefs are critically important to the overall health and balance of the marine ecosystem: 

• Despite covering less than 1% of the ocean floor, coral reefs support about 25% of all known marine species. These reefs are home to various types of fish, crustaceans, mollusks, and many other organisms, making them essential for maintaining biodiversity. 
• They serve as critical nursery grounds for many fish species. The nooks and crannies of coral structures offer protection to juvenile fish, allowing them to grow and develop safely. These young fish eventually migrate to other parts of the ocean, helping to sustain fisheries that are vital for human food security.

• Dolphins and Whales: The gulf is frequented by numerous cetaceans, including bottlenose dolphins, spinner dolphins, and even humpback whales during their migratory season. Dolphin-watching tours are a popular activity for tourists. The Golfo Dulce has just been designated as a Whale Heritage Area by the World Cetacean Alliance (WCA) too. The Whale Heritage Site program is an initiative created by WCA and supported by World Animal Protection which recognizes destinations around the world where coastal communities work together to protect, respect, and celebrate cetaceans and their habitats.  

• Fish Species: The gulf is teeming with a diverse range of fish species, from colorful reef fish like parrotfish, angelfish, and butterflyfish to larger predators like barracuda, snapper, and various species of grouper.
