Costa Rica Fishing Adventures

From Casual to World Class Sport Fishing... it's all at Nicuesa!

Located on the Golfo Dulce, one of the deepest gulfs in the world, and minutes from the mouth of the Pacific Ocean, Playa Nicuesa Rainforest Lodge is perfectly located to enjoy both world class off-shore/deep sea sport fishing and in-shore fishing adventures! We offer a variety of fishing opportunities -ranging from a casual hour of late afternoon fishing right off our pier for small bonito or snapper to a full day of world class sport fishing for sailfish, marlin, tuna and dorado. And… lots of options in between.

In Shore Fishing at Playa Nicuesa: Boats, Guides, Equipment

We fish from our pier, the shore, kayaks and from Nicuesa's local panga boats (24 foot boats with 115 horsepower four stroke engines). You will fish with lodge's team of local guides familiar with fishing all the gulf's best spots.
  • Trolling with our boats in the vicinity of the lodge and nearby coves. We usually go for 1.5 to 2.5 hours either early morning 6:00 to 8:00 AM, or before sunset 4:00 to 6:00 PM. This trip offers beautiful scenery, calm waters and the opportunity to catch bonito, pacific mackerel, skip jack tuna, barracuda, and many types of jack fish and snapper. $75+TAX/PER HOUR - Includes, Captain, Guide, Equipment.
  • Pier and Shore Fishing - Fishing from our pier and beach. Good action in the early morning and late afternoon for snapper, jacks, bonito and large needlefish. Use our rods or join the locals and learn how to fish from a hand line. NO CHARGE, We supply equipment.
  • Kayak Fishing - We have kayaks equipped with rod holders for fishing along the beautiful rock shoreline of the Gulf for a variety of fish. Troll with lures or follow the rocky shoreline and cast into the shallow waters for snapper and barracuda. (see Trolling above). NO CHARGE, We supply equipment.
  • Golfo Dulce/ Rio Esquinas Fishing Tour - Trolling for fish and bait combined with anchoring and casting from boat at river mouths and within the brackish mangrove filled waters of the Esquinas River. This is an excellent opportunity to catch larger fish including various snapper, snook and large jack fish, and with some luck, the prized roosterfish! Best at certain tides. $375+TAX Flat (1-6 pax) In Shore Fishing (Nicuesa Panga; 6am-12pm).

Deep Sea Fishing in the Costa Rica Pacific Ocean

Come to Playa Nicuesa Rainforest Lodge and enjoy world class fishing! Each day, fish with the area's best captains and boats while staying in beautiful rainforest accommodations at Playa Nicuesa. The Pacific Ocean in Southern Costa Rica is one of the best fishing spots in the world for a variety of species including Sailfish, Marlin, Yellowfin Tuna, and Dorado (Mahi Mahi or Dolphin fish). Also found here in the Gulf are Roosterfish, Snapper, Snook and large Jack fish.
We use only the area's best captains and equipment. These boats will pick you up in the A.M at our pier and return you at the end of the day. Full day tours usually leave Nicuesa at 6:30am returning between 3 and 4 in the afternoon. It is approximately 50 minutes to the mouth of the Pacific and then you will go from 5 to 20 miles.

While Playa Nicuesa bills itself as an eco-friendly, multi-sport jungle experience, fishing is certainly one of the main attractions-guests can opt for inshore or offshore guided trips, or head out in outfitted fishing kayaks. Sharing the Magic of the Coastal Rainforest

From under the boat's canopy, our guide, Tomas, quietly hands off a well-weighted rod to my 12-year-old daughter, Lillian. He recognizes that much of the cruising done through the tranquil waters of Costa Rica's Golfo Dulce is at trolling speed, so he never misses an opportunity to throw out a lure. So far, we've been up close to pods of bottle-nose dolphins, weaved through shimmering schools of airborne tuna, and caught mackerel, jacks, and bonito, but what I'd really like to see is what's at the end of Lillian's line. Read the Full Article >

Guest Comments about Costa Rica Fishing at Nicuesa Lodge

"It Could Not Have Been More Perfect"
Nicuesa nicely keeps you in touch with nature while affording you all the comforts of home. Jose and Eric kept my 14 year old son enthralled the entire trip.. from waterfall hikes, to night hikes, endless fishing trips and to jumping off the dock at night to swim with the bio-luminescent organisms. Never have we wanted to repeat a vacation ... we'd gladly return to Nicuesa. Read full review >

"Incredible.......Enough Said!"
We had all the privacy we wanted within a lodge filled with adventure. The staff was friendly and informative. The food was so delishious. The sport fishing was great, as well as hiking throughout the jungle. We are so happy we came here and we highly recommend this lodge. Read full review >

"One Word: Magical!"
The area is beautifully pristine and the fishing was great! They set us up with two kayaks and casting rods. We fished two different days and caught tuna, pompano and snapper. We brought the fish back to the lodge and the wonderful chef cooked them up and we had them for supper--plenty enough to share with other guests! And the food?--seriously fresh and fabulous vegetables, fruit and more. And they were very accommodating to our special dietary needs. Read full review >

"Over The Top! Exceeded Our Wildest Expectations...."
I went on the briefest of fishing excursions and got into a run of Barracuda, catching a mess for dinner. Oh, and the meals - every meal was lovingly prepared from scratch every day - breads were made at one meal for the next - and every day presented a bounty of fruit either on the table cut simply or blended into smoothies or just iced drinks.
